From April 2008 we will provide you with a new brown bin for your garden waste which we will empty fortnightly from June 2008. We will deliver a calendar on the lid of the garden waste bin which will let you know the dates of your collections.
One week we will collect your garden waste from your brown bin, the next week your rubbish from the black bin. Collections will be on the same day of the week.
What can I put in my Brown Bin?
What CAN go in:
- Leaves
- Cold Ashes
- Grass cuttings
- Weeds & Flowers
- Small woody waste and prunings
What CAN NOT go in:
- Soil
- Bricks
- Stones
- Plastic bags
- Non-garden waste
Please make sure your bins are out by 7.30am on your collection day.
Where does all the material for recycling go after it is collected?
The garden waste collected is taken to a special treatment facility where it is processed into compost and garden mulch.
What can I do with excess green waste that won’t fit in the bin?
- Excess waste can be taken for composting at the Waveney Road, Civic Amenity Site, Ballymena.
- Green waste as well as organic kitchen waste can be placed into a compost bin- the Council offer these free of charge and can be collected from the Waveney Road Civic Amenity Site.
- Householders with large gardens could make their own compost heap.
Why can’t I put vegetable peelings/food waste in my brown bin?
Only garden waste can be disposed of in the brown bin.
The foot and mouth epidemic in 2001 led to new legislation at compost sites regarding the disposal of food waste to help prevent the spread of disease. Most compost sites are open to the elements meaning that animals such as seagulls or rodents can access the compostables. These pests can then spread diseases which may affect the animal but also the human population.
A soon as facilities to process food waste safely become available to Ballymena Borough Council you will be able to put food waste into your brown bin. You will be kept informed of any changes.
