The aim of the Food Safety Team is to ensure the protection of and good health of the consumers in Ballymena by promoting and maintaining high standards of quality and safety within the food manufacturing, catering and retail industries.
In carrying out its functions it is responsible for enforcing the requirements of the Food Safety (NI) Order 1991, the Food Hygiene Regulations (NI) 2006 and many other associated regulations dealing with standards of hygiene and the composition and labelling of food. Inspection of premises
Officers of the Food Safety Team carry out regular inspections of food premises to ensure the sale of safe hygienic food and the maintenance of high standards of hygiene as governed by the provisions of Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 Hygiene of Foodstuffs. Composition and Labelling
For the further protection of the public sampling programmes have been drawn up for both chemical analysis and microbiological examination of foods.
Almost 110 samples of various foods are taken each year to determine their compliance with composition and labelling standards. This has over the years resulted in varying follow up action, ranging from advice to manufacturers to prosecution of offenders.
Approximately 260 samples of food are taken annually for microbiological examination. These relate to highly perishable foodstuffs and the programme is designed to monitor both the standard of hygiene in the handling practices and procedures of food production as well as the bacteriological quality of the food. Consumer Complaints
Investigation of consumer complaints forms a significant area of work for the Food Safety Team. Every year the department receives complaints such as:
• Alleged illness due to the consumption of food • Contamination of food by metal, glass, plastic etc. • Contamination by animal and vegetable matter, rodents and mould growth • Product labelling irregularities, and • Hygiene conditions in premises. Advisory Role
The Food Safety Team also have advisory and consultative roles in relation to planning applications, residential home registrations etc. not to mention the assistance given to business operators on the layout of their premises, use of suitable equipment and materials and other matters relating to the composition and labelling of their products.
