 Mayor's Message
I consider it a great honour to be nominated and elected as Mayor for the borough of Ballymena. This is the town I was born and brought up in, where I was educated and have since lived and worked.
Ballymena means “middle town” which is an apt description for a town that is the ‘hub’ of County Antrim. It is a busy, vibrant premier shopping town renowned for its family run businesses, hospitality and first class facilities. It is also the gateway to the Glens of Antrim with some of the most beautiful scenery in Northern Ireland characterised by Slemish Mountain together with the surrounding patchwork of rivers, meadows, woodland, moorland and historic features. This combination makes the area unique and the variety of recreation, culture, retail and entertainment on offer are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Ballymena borough also has a strong, growing economic base and due to its proximity to air and sea ports offers a prime location for future business investment. Strengthening the local economy further is the most effective way of improving the quality of life for all our communities and during the next few years we will be focusing on moving forward with our integrated economic strategy to deliver sustainable growth and development.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of being Mayor is the opportunity I have to meet people from across the borough of Ballymena. There are so many inspirational individuals making a difference within our communities or acting as ambassadors for the borough through their work and achievements. It is the character, integrity and warmth of our people that make this area special.
In carrying out these duties, I am supported by my wife as Mayoress. We are both very proud of the roles we play and look forward to continuing in them until the end of my term in office in May 2012.
Councillor Hubert Nicholl
