ACTIVE COMMUNITIES PROGRAMME
Funded by Sport Northern Ireland, ‘Active Communities’ is a programme that aims to increase participation in sport and physical recreation in communities throughout NI, especially amongst the under represented groups including women and girls, people with a disability and older people. Sport Northern Ireland will invest up to £13.5 million in the employment, deployment and training of a network of over 100 coaches who will facilitate the delivery of a wide range of sports and activities in all 26 district council areas of NI.
Thanks to this investment, Ballymena, Carrickfergus and Larne Borough Councils are working in partnership to employ specialist coaches and activity leaders to deliver a range of sporting and recreational activities across the 3 Boroughs. These activities include Football, Basketball, Cricket, Dance and Physical Activity.
Coaches and leaders will deliver physical activity and sport in school, community and club settings across the 3 Boroughs over the next 4 years. Ballymena Borough Council will have access to a full-time multi sports coach and a physical activity leader specialising in Dance, both of whom have been Access NI checked and hold First Aid Qualifications:
Mr Craig Livingston – Multi Sports Coach specialising in Football, Basketball & Cricket
Mrs Lesley McLaughlin – Physical Activity Leader specialising in Dance
Active Communities will be open to everyone but there will be a particular emphasis on creating opportunities for underrepresented groups such as women and girls, older people and people with a disability to participate in sport and physical recreation.
If you would be interested in setting up a meeting with a view to having one or both of our coaches come to your organisation to conduct a programme or to discuss other qualifications which our coaches have please contact Katrina McCaughan, Sports Development Officer on 028 2563 8510 or alternatively email katrina.mccaughan@ballymena.gov.uk and we will arrange to come out and meet with you in the coming weeks.

Free tickets are now available for the 2011 Boccia World Cup!
The CPISRA Boccia World Cup, which will take place at the University of Ulster’s Jordanstown Campus from the 20 -26th August 2011, is the first London 2012 pre games training tournament to be attracted to Northern Ireland. It is being organised by the University of Ulster, GB Boccia and Disability Sports NI. The event is sanctioned by the international governing body for the sport CPISRA, and is being funded by UK Sport, Sport Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and Newtownabbey Borough Council.
Boccia is a Paralympic sport designed specifically for athletes with high levels of disability, including people with cerebral palsy. It is one of only three Paralympic sports that does not have an Olympic counterpart. It is a target ball sport. The aim of the game is simple; to get your balls closer to the white target ball than your opponent. It is one of the fastest growing Paralympic Sports and is now played in over 50 countries across the world including Northern Ireland.
Boccia is an intensely tactical and skilful sport. A successful player needs the accuracy of a darts player, the geometric precision of a snooker star and the ability to plan several shots ahead like a chess Grandmaster. At first glance it seems sedate but the spectator swiftly gets drawn in by the ebb and flow of the game. One ball can change the game completely and the tension can sometimes be unbearable.
This is a unique once in a lifetime opportunity to see the sport played at the highest competitive level, so book your tickets now.
